· sign up at the Adult Spiritual Development table after Sunday services or

· on the course sign-up sheets posted in the Dining Room

You can pay at the first class. Please write the course title(s) in the memo line of the check. We will let you know if the class is full.
You may also send registration & payment to the USG Church Administrator, 6511 Lincoln Drive, Philadelphia PA 19119.

Open enrollment: you may enroll in a course after the first session has met.

Closed enrollment: contact teacher after the first class for admittance.

UU 101 – AN INTRODUCTION TO UNITARIAN UNIVERSALISM

UU101 is a one-hour introduction to Unitarian Universalism for visitors and new members. Childcare is provided. Attendees will receive a complimentary copy of The Unitarian Universalist Pocket Guide.

WINTER / SPRING 2010 COURSE OFFERINGS

SPIRITUALITY, EMOTIONAL AWARENESS AND ART
Dates: Wednesdays 01/20, 02/17, 03/17
Times: 7:30 to 9:00 PM
Location: Austin Youth Lodge (2nd floor)
Description: The Golden Rule is basic to most spiritual practices. As many of us travel through life we discover how difficult it can be to follow this rule. The competitive drive of our culture often puts us into a position of using behaviors that damage the earth or others. We discover that we often hurt others inadvertently. Many of us have also discovered that we are not quite sure of what we are feeling, in the moment. Empathy has been defined as “the skill or ability to tap into our own experiences in order to connect with an experience someone else is relating to us”, Brené Brown. In other words, the better we are at being self-aware, the more able we are to be empathic with others, and to genuinely “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. This workshop focuses on art techniques everyone can use to help increase their awareness of their feelings.

SEEING IS ACHIEVING: USING VISUALIZATION TO REACH YOUR LIFE GOALS
Dates: Sundays 02/21, 02/28 and 03/07Times: 9:30-10:30 AM

Description: This course will cover the following learning objectives: A) How to get into a relaxed or Alpha state, which makes the mind more receptive to programming; B) How to visualize the future; C) How to use relevant past positive experiences to aid in the achievement of a career goal.

THE FOUR NOBLE TRUTHS
Dates: Sundays 03/07, 03/21, 03/28
Times: 12:45 to 2:00 PM

Description: This lecture and discussion is limited to people with gentle hearts and inquisitive minds. Buddhism presents the world with a beautiful and profound teaching which is also an effective way to live our lives as spiritual beings, i.e., it is a practical alternative to materialism. Buddhism could be of benefit to many, but the concepts and terminology are usually unfamiliar to us in the West, and that makes much of this wisdom seem inaccessible. In this course we will study the Buddha’s central teaching, The Four Noble Truths, as a vehicle for introducing students to Buddhist ideas and to the Buddhist way of life. The first Sunday will give an overview of Buddhist teachings. The second two Sundays will focus more on how The Four Noble Truths can be lived on a daily basis. Our discussions will be grounded in the Pali Canon, which scholars agree is the best historical record of what the Buddha actually said.Enrollment: Contact teacher for admittance after first class.
Preparation: Short readings in text to be assigned each week.
Leader: Bill has been studying and practicing Buddhism for 15 years and served as President of the Tibetan Buddhist Center of Philadelphia for 5 years.

INTRO TO “A COURSE IN MIRACLES”
Dates: Wednesdays 04/07, 04/14, 04/21, 04/28
Times: 7:30 to 9:30 PM
Location: Sullivan
Description: A Course in Miracles (ACIM) was scribed through a process of inner dictation by Helen Schucman, a medical psychologist at Columbia University, over a seven year period beginning in 1965. The Voice, as Helen called it, identified Himself to her as Jesus. Considered a modern scripture by millions, its Christian terminology differs greatly from conventional Christianity. Not easy reading, many join ACIM study groups to learn and practice its teachings.

INTRODUCING ISLAM
Dates: Mondays 04/19, 04/26
Times: 7:00-9:00 PM
Location: Sullivan
Description: This course is an introduction to the faith of Al-Islam by a practicing member of the faith. It includes a lecture describing the basic tenants, a workshop in which participants can learn the Muslim prayer or salat, and a discussion about the myths and stereotypes surrounding the faith. The course will emphasis the similarities as opposed to the differences of Islam and the other major faiths, and will also include an interesting perspective of the facilitator’s cultural journey to Islam as an African-American.
